Kane: the Next Generation
Chapter One
Kane, the son of Jett and Eva, is having his 16TH birthday, where we are going to begin our little tale, again.
It is my birthday; I am becoming a man today. Kane thought looking into the mirror trying to get his black hair that he got from his father out of his purple eyes that he got from his mother.
When he got downstairs, he sat at the table with two wrapped up things in his spot. One was small, and one was a little bit bigger.
“The small present you can keep, but the bigger one you have to give back if it doesn’t work.” His mother said sitting down at the table, fixing her red hair.
Then his father came in from outside with Eragon laughing at some kind of a joke he didn’t understand.
Then his aunt Lilth came in, her hair in the same tight bun she always wore. Lilth sat by his mother, and said, “What are you waiting for? Open your gifts!”
Kane looked at his mother and when she nodded he started opening the small one. It was a dagger, with a silver handle and a smooth red blade. Kane was speechless, but he managed a thank you with a grin.
Then he put the dagger on his belt carefully.
Kane started carefully unwrapping the last one. He could feel his eyes bulge out of the sight. His second gift was an egg! It was white. He touched it. The royal sign showed up! Kane almost fainted with excitement.
“Two generations now!” Kane’s father’s eyes beamed with happiness.
“Another one finally, that stubborn egg wouldn’t hatch from the day we found it, which was almost a decade now. Kane we might want to get going if we want to get there before nightfall.” Eragon said getting up. Kane knew what he meant. Kane ran upstairs, feeling so happy, and started packing as neatly and quickly as he could. He grabbed his duffle bag and joined the rest of the group downstairs.
He walked out of his house following Eragon, with the egg in his hands when he got a message from his father. Be careful, my son. Jett said.
Kane smiled and left his childhood home.
###########################
He said goodbye to Max, Alex, and Jade. Jade, being hopeful as she always is, said, Go make us proud! In her usual upbeat voice that brought him to sleep, even on his most sleepless nights.
Kane nodded as he climbed onto Saphira still clutching the egg. “I hope you are not afraid to fly.” Eragon said.
“Me, afraid of flying? That is like saying a fish is afraid to swim! You must have forgotten that I was raised by dragon riders!” Kane said jokingly.
He felt Saphira laugh underneath him. I always love the young ones! They are way funnier! Saphira said with a last laugh then calming herself down.
Eragon rolled his eyes as they lifted off towards Eragon’s teaching house.
Chapter Two
They landed when the sun was brushing the horizon calling to end of a beautiful day. Kane ran his fingers through his hair. (A habit developed when he was worrying about something.) What am I worried about? My life is going well! Kane reinsured himself. Or I am lying to myself.
Kane was shown to his room, the same one his mother had. It looked like what she described it as: a violet curtain covering the windows, the painting of Eragon’s father, Brom, hanging over the pine desk.
He got ready for the banquet that happened every time a new rider was found. He wore his best green tunic, and brown pants. He gave up with trying to take his hair out of his eyes.
Then Kane walked into the banquet room to find the room has only him, Eragon, and a burnet headed girl he didn’t recognize. Kane sat down and looked up when he saw that Eragon rose to give a speech. “You two can eat, and get equated.” Then Eragon sat down.
He noticed a movement to his right where the girl sat. He looked at the corner of his eye to see her put her hair behind her ear. But her ear was pointed, pointed like an elf’s.
“Hello, I am Kane.” Kane said as he stuck out his hand for her to shake.
“Hi, my name is Athena.” Athena replied as she shook Kane’s hand.
Then the three of them didn’t speak until everyone was done eating. Then Eragon said, “Your dragons will hatch tonight. It will be wise to stay up until then. When they hatch I want you two to go immediately to the library which is the furthest room on the second floor to the right. So go upstairs and get ready for a sleepless night.”
And a sleepless night it was. Kane pasted the time sketching things in a tablet that he got for his 15TH birthday. He was in the middle of sketching the egg when it started hatching. He walked over to the desk were he put the egg at, sat down on a chair by the desk, looked outside guessing it was around midnight. Kane brought his attention back when he heard a sharp Crack! Then the whiter –than- snow baby dragon flopped out of its breakable cell.
Kane knew what would happen next, when he touches the dragon he will feel a pain that feels like a bucket full of liquid fire poring down his arm. Closing his eyes tightly, he put his palm against the dragon’s forehead.
Kane threw out a fast paced stream of curses as the pain came. Then when the pain went away, he threw one more out for good measure, and flipped his hand so he could see his gdwey ignia. He carefully grabbed his dragon, and ran towards the library, trying to avoid his dragon’s sharp teeth on his hand. “Feisty aren’t you! Ouch!” Kane yelled as the dragon sank his teeth into Kane’s hand. When the dragon let go, Kane saw that there was blood on his hand. You little devil!, he yelled in his mind. He met Eragon, while he was reading a pretty thick book. He put the book down. Finally Athena came with her newly hatched red dragon.
“Now that the dragons have hatched, you need to go through their minds to get the information of their gender. After you get that then you can name them.” Eragon said opening up his book again and started reading.
Kane relaxed and dived into his dragon’s mind. Are you a boy? He had an image of a thumb up. Hmmm… what should I name you? A page out of a history book answered this question.
He smiled as he proclaimed, “His name is Boreas!”
Then Athena called out, “Her name is Crimson.”
Chapter Three
A thought came into Kane’s mind: I like it! It said. Classical, but firm. True, but mysterious.
Oh lordy, Boreas is going to be one of the brilliant ones. I can tell. Kane thought as he shook his head.
“Well we better get some rest, training starts tomorrow.” Eragon said putting a blue jay feather book mark into the book and closing it.
Kane I think I can walk. Said a prideful voice that came from his dragon.
Fine, suit yourself. Kane answered as he put Boreas down.
Surprisingly, Boreas could walk well. He got lost once in a while, but he could walk just fine. Boreas’s hard scales gleamed dimly through the candle lit house.
When they got to their room, Kane flopped on the bed, closing his eyes to sleep. H e felt Boreas land right by his right leg. Good night, Kane. Boreas said yawning.
Good night, Boreas. Kane answered before he drifted off to sleep.
Kane woke up with a numb leg. He carefully picked up Boreas, and put him on the pillow as he got up and changed into new clothes and splashed cold water on his tired face.
When Kane was done, Boreas woke up and shook his body like a cat. Kane opened up the door, Boreas and Kane walked side-by- side to the front lawn, where they met Eragon.
Soon after Kane found Eragon, Athena came with her red dragon called, Crimson. Then they walked to the forge to make their swords. They did the same weird measuring that they did on Kane’s mother and father.
“You look familiar.” One of the workers stated as she measured Kane. “Do you know a girl with fiery hair and purple eyes? Or a man with jet black hair and golden eyes?”
“Yes, they are my parents.”Kane answered with a little grin.
“Oh, so you are Jett and Eva’s kid. You look just like them.” The woman stated.
“Thank you.” Kane said getting a little red in the face.
An hour or so later Kane and Athena got their swords. One as white as snow and one as red as blood.
When they got back Eragon made an announcement. “Since there are the two of you”, he began. “I asked my brother, Murtagh, to help give you the one-on-one attention that dragon riders need. Also, Saphira and Thorn will teach the dragons what they need to know. Now, with that in mind, lessons will begin tomorrow. The rest of the day is yours to spend on anything you want to do.” Eragon finished as he left without another word.
So, Boreas, what do you want to do? Kane asked his dragon.
I don’t know. Maybe you can take me to the library and teach me to read! Boreas suggested with a hint of hope as they walked to the house.
Sure but may I ask, why do you need to learn to read? Kane asked when they walked into the library.
Since I am wiser than you, I should be able to read! Boreas said with a little bit of vain in his voice.
Kane laughed until he was in a ball on the floor with hurt ribs.
It is true! Dragons were proven wiser than humans or elves! Boreas argued with a hint of annoyance in his voice.
Kane got up and took deep breathes to try to dull the pain in his ribs.
“Let’s get started.” Kane said getting a piece of paper and a pencil.
Chapter Four
The sun was setting when Eva walked into the forest, trying to clear her head.
After she was there for a half hour, Jett followed Eva.
“What is on your mind, Eva?” Jett asked sitting on the same log as Eva.
“Our son is on my mind. Murtagh is coming to train the new riders.” Eva said with a sigh.
“And you are worried why? If he is just like you, he can beat Murtagh easily.”
“That is not what I am worried about! I heard that the thing that possessed Murtagh is around again!” Eva said getting frustrated.
“You shouldn’t listen to gossip. Most of it is made by lairs. Or, not to make you mad, women who have nothing better to do!”
“Men, they get nothing at all! Sometimes I think they are so stupid! Urg!”
Eva and Jett started to laugh as Eva’s childish behavior.
“Come back inside. You will catch your death out here!” Jett said as he and Eva walked back to their house.
Chapter Five
Kane was right; Boreas is one of the smart dragons. He only needed until dinner (which was an hour after they started) to learn the alphabet. By the time they got to the banquet hall, Boreas could read a page without any help.
As they were eating Eragon asked, “So, what did you two do?”
“Well, Crimson and I went exploring in the woods.” Athena said after a drink of water.
“I helped Boreas learn to read.” Kane said as he was done chewing a cooked carrot.
“You did what? You taught Boreas to read?” Athena said as she started to chuckle.
“Yes and for your information, Boreas can read a page without help!”
“I can see how you are like your mother, she can read, and teach reading very well.” Eragon said finishing eating and walking to where ever he was going.
Kane sat there for a few minutes, and then he left.
Kane found Boreas sitting on a chair reading a book, and when he was done with a page, he just flicked his tail and the page turned. I shouldn’t have taught you how to read! Now you will read every time we have a break in our training. Kane said with annoyance.
No, what do you think I will do with my new ability? Don’t do anything with it? Boreas said as he jumped off the chair. Can you read to me tonight? Just this once?
Fine! Only this once! Kane answered. But only if I get to pick the book!
Kane picked out one of his favorite books and walked to their room and closed the door. Kane sat on his bed and started reading out loud. Soon after Kane started, Boreas jumped on the bed and sat by Kane.
After he read for an hour, his voice got sore and the words started dancing like he was drunk.
When he closed he saw that Boreas was passed out on the bed. Kane wiped his weary eyes and fell asleep with the book in his hands.
Kane woke up in the middle of the night. He heard banging. “I will not be a coward!” Kane heard Eragon scream.
What in the bloody hell is going on? Kane asked in his head.
I don’t know but I am going to go bonkers if they keep on arguing. Boreas stated as he stood up shaking himself and stretching.
Who is arguing, Boreas? Kane asked with a yawn.
Eragon and some other guy. I caught a bit of his name. It was something like Murry.
Do you mean Murtagh? Kane asked as he heard a yell and a crash.
Kane jumped up and ran down stairs. He looked through the rooms until he found Eragon and Murtagh picking up books in the library. First no one noticed that he was there until Eragon looked up. Kane was about to turn around and leave when Murtagh looked up and asked, “Are you Kane?”
“Yes, I sorry if I disturbed you. I will leave.”
“You mostly look like your father, except when you look at your eyes. Now those came from your mother.” Murtagh said as he picked up the rest of the books.
Boreas finally caught up with Kane when Kane asked, “What was all the yelling about?”
Murtagh looked at Eragon for a minute and said, “I will tell you, but Athena, I think that is her name is needs to come too.”
Eragon was pale and had a worried look on his face. Kane never saw Eragon like that in all his sixteen years.
Kane quickly obeyed. He ran to Athena’s room. He knocked, but when she didn’t answer, Kane opened up the door and shook her awake. Athena woke up with a startle.
“Shhh...Eragon and Murtagh wants to talk to us. I’m surprised that you didn’t hear them arguing a few minutes ago.” Kane said quickly when she looked at him with a look of confusion.
“Ummm…I need to get dress. So can you please go outside?” Athena said as she looked at her dressing gown.
“Oh yes, I will be outside.”
Kane walked out of the room and waited in the hall. Then he noticed that Boreas extremely grew during the last few days.
Women, they can’t just get dressed or get ready fast enough! Boreas yelled angrily.
Boreas! You hatched a few days ago, and now you sound like a blimey old man! Kane yelled to Boreas.
Before Boreas could reply, Athena came out of her room. Kane lead Athena into the library, where they found Murtagh leaning against the shelves of books, and Eragon sitting in a chair staring out into space.
It was when Athena accidently bumped into a table when Murtagh and Eragon came back to earth.
“We are all here, you can tell us now.” Kane said sitting on the floor cross-legged.
Murtagh took a deep breath. “You have heard of the story on how I kidnapped your aunt.”
“Yes, go on.”
“Athena, you might want to sit too. It will be a long story.” Eragon said with a weary look in his eyes.
“Well since Athena doesn’t know what we are talking about, I will fill her in.” Murtagh said sitting down.
Boreas curled up by Kane’s legs.
“Well, this story happened 18 years ago.” Eragon began.
Chapter Six
“Okay to get this strait: the thing that possessed you, Murtagh, gave you a dream that stated that it wants to possess Eragon? And that the thing that possessed you has a human form. And piercing the heart with an arrow or a sword will kill it.” Athena asked with a confused look on her face.
“I will be right back.” Kane said as he got up and sprinted to his room. At his room he grabbed a piece of paper and wrote:
Dear Mother and Father,
Just to let you know, the thing that possessed Murtagh into kidnapping Aunt Lilth is back again and wants to possess Eragon. It also has a human form. No need to worry. Everything is under control.
DO NOT COME! I know you like the back of my hand. So follow my advice: DO NOT COME.
Kane
Kane put the letter in the beak of a tamed owl that can deliver letters.
Then he walked back to the library and everyone looked at him like he was a lunatic.
“What?” Kane said as Athena shook her head.
After an hour of talking, they desided that it was time to go to bed.
Kane woke up and got dressed. Outside it started to thunder. Kane and Boreas walked to the garden where they met Eragon and Murtagh. Saphira and Thorn was waiting with them too. Athena and Crimson came shortly after.
“Murtagh, who do you want to work with?” Eragon said as he dulled his sword.
“Geuloth du knifr.” Kane said quickly before Murtagh made his decision.
“I will take Kane.” Murtagh said walking a few feet away from Eragon and Athena. Kane followed without a word.
Kane gripped his sword tightly. But he loosened his grip when he remembered that his father said to never grip a sword too tight.
Murtagh and Kane started to circle each other waiting for the other one to strike.
Murtagh swung his sword at Kane. Kane blocked and gave Murtagh a blow to the leg. “Stagey from his mother, and power from his father. Don’t get over confident.”
In the corner of his eye he could see Eragon and Athena fight with the speed of lightning. Focus! Boreas snapped at Kane.
Kane went to bed sore. As Kane started to close his eyes something knocked on the window. He got up and went to see who or what knocked on his window.
There by his window was an owl, one almost as white as Boreas, but with brown specks on the head and the chest. He grabbed the letter from the owl’s beak. It was from his parents. Oh come on! Parents don’t listen! Kane opened the letter and read:
Dear Kane,
We are coming. Tell Eragon that we are coming. See you soon.
Mom and Dad
Kane punched a near by wall, bruising his knuckles. He let out a groan and flopped back on the bed.
Kane woke up finding himself on the floor, and Boreas spread across the bed. Boreas was almost as tall and wide as the bed. Don’t worry, Kane, I will sleep outside for now on. Boreas assured Kane.
Kane hurried up and met Murtagh and Eragon at the training field holding the letter that he got last night.
When Eragon gave Kane a look that meant he was confused, Kane just shrugged his shoulders. Then Eragon passed the note on to Murtagh.
“A reunion, yeah.” Murtagh said rolling his eyes. “Might as well start training now.”
Kane quickly blunted sword, which he is trying to name. Let the soreness begin!
Chapter Seven
It was about midday when they heard Kane’s parents land. A part of Kane was glad that his parents were there, but the other have was angry with them for not listening to him. Well did I ever listen to them all the time?
Boreas met him in the front yard.
Boreas was aware of the x-ray type vision that Kane’s parents were giving him. At first it was a little creepy, but he came to reality that Kane’s parent’s just wants to know that he is well protected.
Boreas heard Eragon say to Kane’s parents, “You guys didn’t have to come.”
“But we wanted to help you train Kane and the other rider.” Eva said as she gestured toward Athena.
The next morning when Kane went outside his parents were by Eragon and Murtagh. “After you have your sword lesson with Eva and I, you will go see Eragon for your Ancient Langue Lessons. Then you will have an hour break for resting and lunch, and then you will go see Jett for archery. So lets begin.”
The next hour and a half was filled with clashing of medal. When it was time Ancient Langue started Kane was sore.
“Okay, before we begin, I need to make sure that both of you know what can happen if you go beyond your limitations with magic. Once you learn the word, you can control the thing. It will not be easy, oh it will take days, months, and even years to do just a simple task. So lets start with the easiest thing, to start a fire.”
Chapter Eight
“Brisingr, come on! Brisingr!” Kane yelled in frustration. Then the wood caught on fire. “Yes! Finally!”
You are getting frustrated over a fire? Kane heard Boreas comment.
Oh shut up! You should be paying attention to Saphira and Thorn, not me! Let me work on my lesson and you your.
Fine, but calm down! Your frustration is getting me frustrated. Boreas stated before he broke contact.
“Okay that is all for today, you two have a break and lunch is in an hour.” Eragon dismissed them.
What do you want to do? Boreas landed and asked.
Up to exploring the forest?
Kane climbed down from a tree. He turned when he heard a twig snap and found a cloaked person with a bow pointed at him. Boreas! Kane thought as he grabbed his sword. The cloaked person moved the bow a little bit to the right and let go. The arrow hit an urgal that was about to stab Kane in the back. Then the person pulled down its hood and it revealed a girl with long black hair, and fierce greenish reddish eyes, she was also an elf. “You better leave there are more coming!” The mysterious girl yelled.
“No it is fine I have reinforcements.” Eragon, Athena, Murtagh, mom and dad, we have urgals attacking us in the forest.
Then he heard the other urgals coming and he put his back on hers so they don’t get attacked again with surprise.
The urgals started to circle them when they heard a roar, it was Boreas who roared. Then Kane heard very rapid footsteps coming towards them. Then Eragon and Athena appeared. Murtagh, Eva, and Jett appeared only seconds later.
“Do not attack unless they do.” Eragon ordered.
It didn’t take long for the urgals to attack. When an urgal cut Kane’s arm, he cut off its head while feeling warm blood run down his arm.
The mystery girl was being circled by urgals. Quickly Kane cut down five urgals that were circling the girl.
“Jierda theirra kalfis!” The girl yelled. Then Kane cut off the heads of them.
Soon after the battle was finished. “Who are you?” Kane asked the girl.
“Jane and my dragon’s name is Moondance is on her way.”
Should we trust her? Boreas asked.
I think so. Kane answered as he ripped the bottom of his shirt and tied the strip onto his arm where it was bleeding.
“Eragon, do you think we can trust her?” Kane heard Murtagh asked quietly.
“Jane, can you tell us what happened to you, from finding your dragon’s egg to the present?” Eragon asked.
Then they saw a purple colored dragon, almost the same age as Boreas; appear behind a patch of trees.
“Yes I can tell you.” Jane answered. “I always liked to go into the Spine. For reasons I do not know. One day I was walking along an old game trail, and I was tripped over Moondance’s egg, realized what I found and desided to keep it, a few days later the egg hatched.
“We desided to not let anyone know of who we are, so we went into hiding. I heard someone land on the ground so I went to investigate, and that is when I met, with that man.” Jane gestured toward Kane. “Sorry but I would call you by your name if I knew it.”
“My name is Kane; this is Athena, Murtagh, Eragon, my mom Eva, and my dad, Jett, Saphira, Thorn, Jade, Max, Boreas and Crimson.” Kane said pointing to them all one by one.
Just as they were leaving, Kane saw a glint on the ground. He picked it up to find out it was a locket.
“Jane, you dropped your” Kane broke off from a pain from his head. He yelled as he lost conciseness.
Chapter Nine
Kane’s dreams where twisted and sprouting new horrible ones. Each one had the locket in it.
Boreas heard Kane scream and felt the pain as if it was his own. Kane is hurt! Boreas yelled at the others, as he ran back. He found Kane holding a locket and was being dragged by an urgal. Boreas ran to the urgal and bit and scratched at the urgal’s leg.
Athena was the first to get there. Then she ran to the urgal and shoved her sword into the urgal’s heart. She grabbed Kane.
“Can you hear me Kane? Speak to me.” Athena cried. The rest of them got there a few minutes later.
“What happened?” Murtagh asked.
“I don’t know. Ask Boreas, maybe he knows.” Athena suggested as all eyes went on Boreas.
Boreas opened his eyes and replied, Kane found Jane’s locket, and what I could tell, got conked in the head by the urgal’s club.
Boreas could feel rage seep from Eva and Jett, which he thought as not a good thing.
“We need to bring him back to the house.” Eragon said and picked up Kane’s arms and back while Jett got Kane’s feet.
It took ten minutes to get Kane to the house and into his bed.
Eva wiped off the blood from Kane’s face.
Call me if something happens. Boreas said to Crimson as he took off to the sky, where he could think clearly.
Kane rolled over and opened his eyes.
“My head!” Kane yelped as he touched his head.
“He is awake!” Kane heard Eragon say.
Then he heard the shuffle of feet. Eva and Jett showed up with red eyes. Then the rest of them showed up with quickness.
Kane sat up, “What happened? How long have I been out?”
“Honey, an urgal sneaked up on you and hit you on the head.” Eva paused and started to cry softly.
Jett hugged her and said, “You were out for a week.”
Chapter 10
They can’t know that I’m Durza’s niece. Jane said to Moondance as they fled to the Spine.
Why, as long as you show no sign of hurting anyone, they would befriend you. Moondance replied.
Ummm…let’s see, he killed my uncle and he would think that I came for revenge.
They walked without saying anything to one another until dusk.
“Where is Jane? I didn’t give her locket to her.” Kane said as he got up and splashed water on his face.
I don’t know she took off when they brought you to the house. Boreas answered.
There is something very mysterious about her. Kane stated. I just wish I knew what it is.
Maybe we will never know.
Kane got dressed and when outside, he met his mother, Murtagh, and Athena by the house. He walked over dulling his sword while he walked.
“Today is going to be a bit more of a challenge,” Murtagh said. “Instead of fighting one-on-one, we are going to fight two-on-one.”
“Who wants to go first?” Eva asked.
Athena went first. It looked hard.
Then it was Kane’s turn. Kane tried to swallow the lump in his throught without success. Kane bent his knees and watched for one of them to attack. Murtagh attacked first, Kane barely blocked the blow. All of Kane’s senses were on high.
Then Eva attacked and Kane blocked that one.
Jane slipped into her home town, Teirm, as the gates where closing. But Moondance had to stay outside the gate.
Jane quickly put her hair down before the guards could notice she was an elf. “You were cutting it close, miss.” One of the guards said.
“I’m sorry; it won’t happen again, sir.” Jane said in her most not guilty voice.
Jane quickly walked down to an old friend’s house. She knocked on the door. “Jane, is that you?” The voice asked.
Then the person walked into the light of the street lamps, it was Lilth.
“Nice to see you old friend.”
Chapter 11
“Oh my god, Kane got hit in the head with a club, is he alright?” Lilth asked as she prepared tea.
“I think so but why do you care so much?” Jane asked.
“I need to go see my nephew, and you should come with me.” Lilth said.
“And who is that?”
“Kane.”
“Your Kane’s aunt?”
“Yes and we will leave tomorrow morning.”
“No I am not going.” Jane shook her head.
“Why are you Durza’s niece?” Lilth said jokingly, taking a sip of tea.
“Yes.”
Lilth choked and went into coughing fits. “What?” Lilth said between coughing fits.
“I am Durza’s niece.” Jane said.
“That would present a problem. But we still need to go tomorrow.”
That night Jane slept in Lilth’s guest bedroom, and talked to Moondance before she drifted to sleep.
Lilth asked Jane to go to the tavern and tell an old friend of hers to watch her house when she is gone.
Jane belted her sword and started to the tavern. When she opened up the door there was a cheery mood in the air.
Jane quickly found the man that fit Lilth’s description: medium height and a little chubby with blonde hair.
As she neared the bar she heard wolf whistles. She felt a wave of anger rush through her. “Come here sweet lady. Come sit on my lap.” A young man said. A few men laughed.
Jane straitened herself up and turned around to the man who said it. She looked him in the eyes and said, “Not even if a shade threatened me.”
One of the men said, “Burn!”
The young man who gave the order got red and had anger in his eyes as she turned around.
“Lilth would like you to watch over her house if you can, sir.” Jane said to the bartender.
“I have it covered.” The man replied. “Watch out!”
When Jane heard a clash of metal behind her she spun around with her sword in her hand.
She saw Kane fighting the rude man.
Chapter 12
Since Kane really didn’t want to kill the man he said, “Slytha!”
Kane stood there with his chest heaving. Everyone was staring at him. “What? The man was trying to kill her.”
Kane took Jane’s wrist and led her out of the tavern. “Do you have to get into trouble? You are lucky that I got there in time.”
“Why are you here?” Jane said looking at Kane with a little hate.
“Wanted to see my aunt Lilth and she told me that you should be here and I should try to get you to go to Eragon’s school.” Kane said. “Also Eragon, Athena, and Murtagh, and my parents are here.”
Kane noticed that Jane showed a little bit that she was terrified. Why is she so scared? Kane wondered as they walked back to Lilth’s house.
“Oh, here’s your locket back.” Kane said as he put it in Jane’s hands. Kane took note that Jane’s knees were wobbly. Kane stopped walking and turned toward Jane and asked, “Why are you so scared?”
“I don’t know how they would react when they find out.”
“Find out what Jane?”
After Jane told Kane, Kane could feel the shock on his face. “You don’t want to see Eragon because he might find out. Right?”
Jane nodded her head.
“Eragon is not the type to kill someone, or hurt them because of their relatives. Look at Murtagh. Eragon didn’t kill him.”
“True.” Kane could tell that she relaxed a little.
“Ready?”
Jane took a deep breath and nodded.
Jane walked tall as she went into the house.
“Let the mysteries unfold.”
Chapter 13
Jane walked in with her head held high and her heart pounding like it had a life of its own. She heard Kane walking behind her.
There was silence after Jane told them. Kane saw that Eragon was thinking, which Kane took as a good sign. “I accept your family tree; none of us has any room to talk. We don’t have any say in who are family is.” Murtagh said.
Jane looked relieved, Eragon agreed.
They took off in the morning. Kane, Jane, and Murtagh rode Thorn, while Athena was with Eva and Jade.
Eragon, Arya, Saphira, Lilth, Alex, Jett, Boreas, Crimson, Moondance, and Max followed closely behind.
They got back to Eragon’s place a few hours later.
They ate supper laughing and sharing stories.
The only one that wasn’t talking was Athena. Boreas, can you ask Crimson if she knows what is wrong with Athena? Kane asked politely.
Sure. I’m not just a dragon, I’m a messenger dragon! Boreas said with humor.
Kane chuckled and waited for Boreas to answer.
Athena got pale and fainted. She started thrashing like she was having a seizure. Athena opened her eyes. There was not a pupil.
Everyone jumped out of there seats and walked ran over to Athena. “In a city by the coast, there is a shade. That shade is me, come get me Eragon. Get me and the thing that possessed your brother and wants you.” A voice said that didn’t sound like Athena’s. Then Athena closed her eyes and slept.
Chapter 14
“Oh come on! I already had to deal with two shades, and there is another one! What has this world gone to?” Eragon said as they crowded around the unconscious Athena’s bed. It has been about two days from when Athena, or who ever it was, said there was a new shade, and Athena hasn’t woken yet.
Athena was having horrible dreams. One of them was:
Athena was walking with her parents, then she felt the same feeling when she pasted out. Then it skipped to when she woke up and she found her parents dead, and blood was covered all over Athena.
A cry broke from Athena’s lips that woke the half asleep Kane. Athena scream as if she was in mortal agony. Athena started thrashing again.
Kane jumped up from the chair he was sleeping in and tried to pin her down. Athena punched Kane in the mouth which cracked and Kane tasted blood. A little later he heard hurried steps coming and Eragon appeared and helped Kane pin Athena down.
Finally Athena stopped. Athena sighed and fell silent.
Kane felt Athena’s forehead. “She has a fever.” Kane said going to get cold water and rags.
For awhile he watched his mother bathe Athena's face in order to try to cool her down. “I wish I knew what was going on in her mind.” Kane muttered.
“But you can find out.” Eragon said thoughtfully and said, “I can’t believe I didn’t think of this sooner! I am a moron!” Eragon walked over to Kane. “You need to try to get into her mind. She might open up to you because she knows you better, and she trusts you.”
Kane took a deep breath and rocked on his heals thinking. “Okay, I will do it.”
For two hours, Eragon taught all there was in going into people’s mind and learning to defend himself if it is needed.
Then Kane sat by Athena’s bed getting ready to go into Athena's mind. Kane slowly came towards Athena’s mind, found that it was unguarded and went in fully aware.
Athena, what happened? Kane said contacting Athena.
I don’t know, I got a massive headache and I pasted out. Athena answered. What happened after I pasted out?
I don’t know how to explain it. If you would only wake up maybe someone would explain it for you.
I will, but not now.
Why? Why not wake up?
I want to rest, because I am tired. Athena laughed.
Okay I would understand that. So I would leave you to your resting.
But I will wake up sometime tomorrow.
Goodbye! And I will be seeing you tomorrow! Kane stated chuckling as slip away from Athena’s mind.
When Kane got back into his own mind he was still chuckling. “What did Athena say?” Eva asked.
“That she got a massive headache before she pasted out and didn’t remember saying that there is a new shade. Also Athena won’t be awakened until sometime tomorrow, because she said she is tired and wants to rest.”
Arya broke out in laughs.
Eragon just stood there shaking his head with a smile on his face. Kane looked out the window, it looked like around midnight.
“Well we should get to sleep. It is late.” Murtagh said.
“Yes we should.” Lilth agreed.
“I will stay here.” Kane said simply.
After everyone went to bed, Kane sneaked into his room to grab his pad of paper and his pencil.
He started sketching Athena sleeping. He finally nodded off to sleep around sunrise.
Kane started to have a dream, a very confusing dream. His surroundings changed with the speed of light.
Kane woke up sore, stiff, and someone poking him. He reluctantly opened his eyes. Boreas head was poking him. And yet his body was outside the house. Kane realized Boreas had a major growth spurt. Kane ran outside and looked at Boreas. He was almost as big as the house. Kane went into the house and came back with a saddle.
Kane strapped it on and climbed onto Boreas’s back. Boreas launched into the sky. Boreas started rolling in the air, Kane laughed and whooped.
Now this is the way of life! I wish I could stay up here forever! Kane exclaimed.
You and me both.
Kane started to get a headache. Oh, no! Kane said as he strengthened his defenses. Who ever, or whatever it was, was trying to break into Kane’s mind. “Land Boreas!”
Kane quickly reviewed what Eragon taught him. Kane was concentrating very hard.
Chapter 15
Kane started to shake and sweat. Boreas roared when they landed. Kane fell off Boreas holding his head. I’m going mad! Kane said as he curled into a ball trying to resist who ever has trying to get in. GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!!!
Pain came from everywhere, his arms, head, and heart. He heard the others coming. “Get out of my head! Get out!” Kane screamed at the top of his lungs.
The pain was so great he finally passed out.
Athena opened her eyes, but Kane wasn’t there. Jane passed the room and saw that Athena was awake. Something is wrong. Something is very wrong. Something said inside her. “What is wrong?”
“Kane was attacked by the shadow.”
“The what?”
“That is what we are calling the thing that is attacking us.”
“Where is Kane?”
“In his room.”
Athena walked very quickly to Kane’s room and opened the door. She covered her mouth from the sight she saw; Kane was very pale and he was tied down on his bed.
Athena walked in and sat down by Kane’s bed. Athena started to shake her head. This is a bad idea! Athena thought as she plunged into Kane’s mind. It was blocked by steel looking walls. Athena found a gap and walked in.
She immediately felt pain coming in waves. Eka eddyr onr fricai! Ach neiat haina eka! Athena said as the pain slowly went away.
Athena, is that you? Athena heard a voice in her head.
What happened to you? They said the Shadow attacked you.
That’s what they are calling it now and yes it did, you should go. I am waking up in a matter of seconds.
Athena withdrew from Kane and waited for Kane to wake up.
“Rumors say that the shade is in Narda. We should go there and look around.” Eragon said over an ancient looking map.
“You are not going to give up on this are you?” Arya asked looking over the map.
“Not until this “Shadow” and shade are killed.”
“What if someone recognizes you? Eragon the man, who killed Galbatorix snooping around Narda, will raise questions.” Murtagh said also looking at the map.
“Then I will change what I look like!” Eragon said getting frustrated.
“This mission could be a death trap!” Jett said.
“Or it could mean peace in the land!” Eva answered.
Everyone except for Kane and Athena was arguing, until Kane yelled, “QUITE!” Then Kane said in a more quite tone, “We can handle this like adults!”
At sundown they desided to go on the mission. That night they packed supplies, and made sure everything was in order.
Chapter 16
They started just before the sun rose. Mist was all around them as they flew. Kane’s clothes where soak by the time they stopped for lunch.
By the time they reached Narda it was already dark. Eragon changed his original brown hair, brown eyes to salt and pepper colored hair, deep blue eyes, and a gray colored beard that went down to his mid chest.
“Wow, should I help you down old man?” A female voice said. Kane turned toward the voice as a red head girl jumped off of Thorn.
“Are you trying to do a Marcia Cross look?” Eragon asked the girl.
“No more of a Julia Roberts.” The girl said.
“Okay, Murtagh! Wow, you look hot!” Eva whispered with a giggle.
“You are just a laugh riot.” Murtagh said rolling his, I mean her eyes.
“We’ve been looking for this shade for this whole week!” Kane said sitting on a stool after, yet again, they didn’t find anything. “Maybe Eragon and Murtagh should show themselves. Then maybe the shade would like to challenge them.”
“It might work.” He heard Eragon whisper to himself.
Eragon got up and walked over to Murtagh and talked to him in undertone for several minutes.
“Let’s start making plans.” Eragon said walking back to the fire.
Everyone split up at the marketplace. Like as planned Kane yelled, “Is that Eragon and Murtagh by the fruit stand?”
There was whispering as everyone looked towards the fruit stand. A man with very red hair, red eyes and very pale skin like he never was in the sun his whole life walked up with his sword in his hand.
“I’ve been waiting for you.” He said in a raspy voice.
Eragon and Murtagh already took out their swords.
Kane quickly took out his sword and walked over to them keeping his eyes on the shade.
The laugh that came out of the shade sounded like it should have come out of something that looked more scary. “You brought a boy to help fight? That is pathetic!”
Kane’s blood was heated and he wanted to strike him dead right then and there. But he just smiled and said, “The only “boy” here is right in front of me.”
Lets put it this way; the shade didn’t like being called a boy.
“Deyja” The shade said aiming at all seven of them. Murtagh, Eragon, Athena, and Kane ducked. But Jett, Eva, and Jane didn’t. Kane watched in disbelief as his parents’ and Jane’s lifeless bodies dropped to the ground.
Everything was in slow motion; the shade running away, Eragon and Murtagh running to the bodies. The crowd around running away. Kane dropped to his knees. Athena came running toward him.
Kane put his face in his hands and cried. He could feel Athena trying to comfort him. Kane got up slightly shoving Athena away, wiped his eyes and ran toward the direction of his friend’s and parents’ killer.
Hatred was up to Kane’s neck. He heard the three dragon’s dying screams. Kane kept on running. Kane ran until his lungs were threatening to blow.
Chapter 17
Kane sat down. In less than twenty minutes he heard the foot steps of Murtagh, Eragon, and Athena.
“Kane, I’m so sorry for what happened to your parents.” Eragon said sitting by him.
Kane got up and said, “I need to finish what we started.”
“I get it.” Eragon said.
“An it means that I have to do it by myself.” Kane said making sure that they knew not to try to come along.
Boreas! Please come. Kane said waiting for Boreas to come.
“Kane, maybe you shouldn’t go. You need to greave.” Athena said grabbing his arm and making him look at her in the eyes.
“When I kill the shade, then we can talk about grieving.” Kane said as he climbed on Boreas’s back who landed only seconds ago.
“What if you die? What about us? Maybe I want to come to help give the justice that your parents and Jane deserve.” Athena said getting as frustrated as she could get.
“Kane, you need to think of the consequences! Would Eva and Jett like it that you are risking your life for justice that will come sooner or later?” Murtagh asked.
“I don’t care what you guys think or say! I am going to go! If you don’t like it, tough!”
And with that they flew away leaving everyone’s feelings hurt and a heart broken: Athena’s heart.
Um...Kane I’m sorry for what happened to your parents and Jane. Maybe if I was around I would have stopped him.
No! It is my fault! I was the one who got the idea to attract the shade by the arrival of Murtagh and Eragon.
“Ma’mor.” Kane whispered as he unlocked to door to a craft work shop.
There was the thing that Kane wanted. A bow and arrows. Since, his was left at Eragon’s place.
On a counter Kane left a letter that read:
Dear Owner of shop,
I am deeply sorry for taking the bow and a pack of 100 arrows.
My full apologies.
Six months later
It was dark and it started snowing. Kane wrapped his clothes tighter around his body. Boreas just stay where you are. I will call you when I need you.
Kane got up, picked up his bow and notched an arrow. He heard a twig snap somewhere behind him. He turned.
Then he saw the man who killed his friend and parents.
Kane aimed and fired. The shade moved quickly out of the way of the arrow.
“Curses.” Kane said as he dropped the bow and arrows and grabbed his sword.
“Why try to kill me? Deep down you know that you will die.” The shade said as he walked forward.
“You wish.” Kane said as he made the first lunge at his heart.
The shade easily blocked the sword’s entry into his heart. They kept fighting for an hour. Sweat was frozen on Kane’s forehead. The shade grazed Kane’s ribs. Kane yelp and held his side still looking at the shade. Kane knelt still holding his side.
“Finally you come to your senses.” Kane heard the shade chuckle. Kane smiled still looking at the ground. Kane grabbed the dagger that he kept in the side of his shoe, and plunged the dagger in the shades heart. Kane kept it there until it dropped to the ground and the shade’s body was gone, he picked up the dagger wiped off the blood, and put it back. His side felt like it was on fire. Boreas landed in a clearing in the forest.
Kane grabbed the extra blanket that he packed and ripped it into strips and tied it around his upper chest. Kane gritted his teeth when the rough fabric rubbed on his wound.
“Lets go home, Boreas.”
Chapter 18
Pure shock was all that Athena felt as she saw Boreas flying above her and landing right in front of her. She could feel her jaw drop as she watched Kane climb down.
She quickly closed her mouth when she saw Kane walk towards her. Athena ran and hugged Kane but let go when she heard Kane yelp under his breath. “You are hurt!” Athena said noticing the torn up fabric under Kane’s shirt.
“Just a graze. Nothing to worry about.” Kane said smiling a weak smile.
“Lets get you inside.”
When Kane and Athena walk through the door. Eragon and Murtagh turned around in their chairs. Eragon smiled got up from his chair and hugged him. “Ouch!” Kane said as Eragon let go.
“This will hurt.” Athena said as she put a cloth on Kane’s wound.
Kane gritted his teeth trying not to scream out.
After Athena bandaged Kane, Kane put on his shirt, lightly.
“How does it feel to get revenge?” Athena asked.
“I haven’t thought about how it feels. But I guess it feels okay.” Kane replied shrugging his shoulders, wincing at the pain.
“Don’t do anything that causing stretching, I think you have at least two broken ribs.” Athena said putting things away.
“Are we going to go after the “Shadow”?” Athena asked weeks after Kane’s return.
“Well, frankly we don’t know what to do!” Eragon said getting annoyed. “We’ve talked about having Murtagh and I go after the “Shadow” but something might happen here when we are not around.”
“There might be a way that we can track him down, but I think only three of us can do it.” Kane said thinking back on something.
“Who do you think can do it?” Athena asked.
“We all have to do it at the same time. And by “we” I mean Murtagh, Athena, and I” Kane said.
“When should we start?” Murtagh asked.
“How about tomorrow night?”
Chapter 19
That night and the next day was filled of training. Kane didn’t mind not getting sleep, he could go without sleep of weeks now a days.
As a precaution they made Eragon tie them to their dragons, unarmed.
“Ready?” Eragon asked as he looked over the knots that he made with the ropes.
“As we will ever be.” Kane replied.
“Just to be reminded this mission is to track him down without him knowing, right?” Murtagh asked just to be sure.
“Yep.” And with that happy note they started the search for The Shadow.
Got him, he is in Carvahall. Athena said.
Okay lets move out. Kane said.
When Kane opened his eyes he saw that Eragon was sitting in the corner. Kane had to shake his head to clear his thoughts.
“Next stop: Carvahall.” Murtagh said.
They planned to go in the next half hour. But fate did something entirely different then planned.
It was odd; the “Shadow” came to Eragon’s house. Then it all happened so fast Shadow attacked. Minutes turned into seconds and it all ended with The Shadow on the ground, dead.
The End
